The Eel River and its South Fork connect the region’s forests, communities, roads, bridges, and flood history. This hub brings historical documents together with clearly dated observations from the USGS stations near Miranda and at Scotia.
Two stations, two records#
South Fork Eel River near Miranda and Eel River at Scotia are distinct USGS monitoring locations. The station number is a more reliable research key than a shortened name, particularly when comparing historical reports with current data services.
The live conditions page displays both stations with source timestamps, retrieval times, and approval status. Discharge measures flow; gauge height uses a station-specific reference datum. A gauge height is not a general measure of the river’s depth, and heights at different stations should not be read as elevations on one common scale.
The 1955 and 1964 floods#
California State Parks maintains a historical interpretation titled The Eel River Floods of 1955 and 1964. It provides a regional historical entry point that should be read alongside the USGS measurement record. A flood’s effects on communities, forests, roads, and bridges are related to, but not identical with, its measured peak discharge.
The USGS report Floods of December 1964 and January 1965 in the Far Western States, Part 2 includes station records for this region. The separate 2009 water-data report for station 11476500 lists the historical maximum discharge as 199,000 cubic feet per second on 22 December 1964, with a 46-foot gauge height derived from floodmarks and a rating-curve extension. Those are the historical report’s values and methods, not a current flood warning.
Why historical measurements need context#
USGS’s evaluation of selected extraordinary floods examines how unusually large flood discharges were determined and the uncertainties of indirect measurement. It includes an Eel River at Scotia case study. The method matters: a direct measurement, a floodmark, and an extended rating curve are different forms of evidence.
This library does not calculate a “normal” seasonal percentile from seven days of observations. Such a comparison would require a suitable long-term series, treatment of missing or revised values, and a stated statistical method. The current charts are a recent trend, while the linked flood reports provide historical context.
River crossings and the redwood corridor#
The highway history collection and photo archive connect river scenery with documented bridges and former road alignments. Each image identifies the source’s place and date. A photograph of the Eel River farther inland or near its mouth is not relabeled as the South Fork near Miranda.
