Avenue of the Giants: History and Route Guide

Choose a direction#

This is a geographic reading sequence, not a list of the official numbered auto-tour stops. Reverse it to match your direction of travel. Use the State Parks brochure and map for mapped junctions, groves, and facilities.

1. Phillipsville#

   The southern community reference in State Parks’ description of the Avenue. Begin by distinguishing SR 254 from the parallel US 101 corridor.

2. Miranda#

   A southern Humboldt community and postal reference. The USGS South Fork Eel station near Miranda provides a separate, precisely identified river-data record.

3. Myers Flat#

   Use the community name and the park map to orient this part of the corridor. The library’s NWS regional forecast is labeled for the Myers Flat area.

4. Burlington and park headquarters#

   The visitor center and headquarters are on the Avenue between Myers Flat and Weott. Consult State Parks for current facility information and the auto-tour brochure.

5. Weott#

   Read the community’s broader setting through park maps and the Eel River flood-history sources. Current SR 254 reports may identify locations by distance from Weott.

6. Dyerville and Founders Grove area#

   Consult the park map for the Founders Grove approach and the Bull Creek–Rockefeller Forest research context. The grove and the broader watershed are related subjects with different scales.

7. Redcrest#

   A northern-corridor community reference shown on the park map. Compare present community names with dated historical maps when researching the route.

   The northern reference in State Parks’ description of the Avenue. Continue with the highway collection to place the scenic corridor in the larger Redwood Highway story.

Before and during the journey#

Read Caltrans SR 254 reports and park notices before relying on an itinerary. The live page identifies source and retrieval times and marks stale data. An empty restrictions panel is not confirmation that all trails, roads, or facilities are open.

The official Caltrans QuickMap and Humboldt Redwoods State Park page remain the primary practical references. This guide does not invent business hours, parking availability, or an estimated driving time.

A historical journey through the corridor#

The Avenue of the Giants history article explains the historical setting; the Highway 101 hub follows road records and older alignments. The forest’s preservation story belongs alongside logging history and Indigenous history and living communities.

Photographs and historic maps are useful companions to travel, provided their dates remain visible. A historic bridge image may document an earlier configuration; an old park brochure may identify a facility that has since changed. Use the photo archive for provenance and the existing visitor reference guide for additional official research links.
