A mobile guide to the redwood corridor in southern Humboldt County, California. Avenue of the Giants (SR 254) follows a historic highway alignment through the Humboldt Redwoods region. Use this guide to orient yourself, then check official notices before setting out.

Read current road and park notices at the original agency before traveling. A missing notice is not an all-clear. Forecasts cover an area, not every grove. Follow posted restrictions and stay on designated routes.

History in the landscape#

The landscape has a living Indigenous history as well as a history of logging, road building, and forest protection. California State Parks traces Humboldt Redwoods State Park’s beginnings to Bolling Memorial Grove in 1921. Later Civilian Conservation Corps work helped develop visitor facilities. The old highway and protected groves are different parts of this regional history.

Communities and stops#

From south to north, useful community references include Phillipsville, Miranda, Myers Flat, Weott, Redcrest, and Pepperwood. Reverse that order when traveling south. These are orientation points, not a replacement for the official eight-stop Auto Tour. Burlington is the park headquarters and visitor-center area, between Myers Flat and Weott.

South Fork Eel River and Eel River help explain this landscape. River measurements describe conditions at individual USGS stations; they do not establish whether a swimming place or river crossing is safe. Gauge height is a station measurement, not the water depth everywhere in the river.
