Historical instructions#

The BLM Knowledge Resource Center lists historical manuals and handbooks, including material on survey instructions and corner evidence. These publications explain the vocabulary and methods appropriate to particular periods. This index does not assign one edition’s requirements to every earlier survey.

The BLM surveying and mapping glossary is a terminology reference. The modern cadastral tools page provides a separate gateway to current technical material.

Using the collection#

Identify the edition, publication date, and relevant section before citing an instruction. A generic link to a collection is useful for discovery but does not replace a page-specific reference when a detailed claim is made.

Begin with township-and-range notation, surveying in redwood country, or the survey-to-GIS guide. These educational pages do not apply the manuals to a particular modern boundary.
