Caltrans route-history appendices used to distinguish modern highway numbering from the earlier incorporation of road segments into the state system.
Summary and historical context#
Appendix L lists route identifiers, termini, formation dates, and periods when routes became state highways. For SR 36 it records a 1964 formation date and a 1907–1933 state-highway range. These fields represent different historical milestones.
This is a useful source for examining claims that a modern highway was “first.” It does not say that the entire Fortuna–Susanville road was built in 1907. Segment adoption, construction, opening, and numbering need to be traced separately when comparing SR 36 with the Redwood Highway.
The record is an agency historical reference. Its table should be followed into the cited route records for a detailed segment study; it is not a current conditions source or a legal determination about any local road.
